Before they part ways with the witch, she reveals to Alex it is possible for them to become human again.

Petulant Steve is more concerned about getting revenge on the wizard for causing such destruction. What will Alex do? Read “The Witch” to see if she chooses to restore her humanity, or fight for the rest of it.

"I haven't reviewed children's books in a long time, let alone one about humans turning into zombies. But this was a fun story to read. What was a pleasant surprise was that halfway through the story it is revealed that the main character is a girl! And a very courageous one at that, smart, and adventurous. The story touches on several moral choices the main characters have to make. That is a good starting point for parents who like to read to their children, as I did when my children were young, to discuss moral issues. All in all, it is a great children's book that I would highly recommend."

  • This is by far my favorite book that I've read from M.C. Steve! It was relatable from the very first line where Alex has a killer headache (I've had migraines for years), all the way to the end where she (I also really liked that this story features a girl, though with a name like Alex I didn't immediately realize that) departs from Steve, with whom she has a sibling-like relationship.
This one was also funnier than the other ones I've read. My favorite line? "What kind of monster tries to hurt a girl's feet? A really short one, maybe" (It's from the Day 4 chapter). The author probably didn't intend it this way, but I think it makes a great joke, which I used to make my family (and myself, of course) laugh.
I also want to say that the conclusion was good - I was a little disappointed with the last book I read from M.C. Steve because it suddenly ended right as I was really getting into it, but this one has the classic wind-down with a setup for another book, so I'm happy with it.
The one thing I would suggest be changed is how often Alex says that she'll write tomorrow. She said that at the end of nearly every chapter, if not every chapter, and considering how short most of the chapters are, it was a little too much. Doesn't take away from the story, though, so it's not a huge issue.

  • This series of books have consistently impressed my children and I. We find that the adventures that Steve and Alex go on are dangerous and scary. In this story Steve and Alex must be successful or they might be zombies forever! Robert G.
  • This is a great book I like how they used real minecraft characters like Steve and Alex and didn't make their own
  • I'm reviewing this book as an 'adult' fantasy reader. Because it is short, I cut a star. Aside from that I LIKE this book. MC Steve quickly introduces us to characters we care about. I assume that 'Steve' is a guy but the main character is a female, Alex. Her problem is that she has been bitten by a died-in-the-wool Zombie and she wants to return to being fully human as soon as she possibly can. Really, this outing just introduces her quest. She meets Steve, who is in the same position...but who has 'anger issues' that limit his effectiveness. How far can they campaign together? Should they drift apart will they reunite? The plot is predictable from the quest genre but is still gripping in the author's hands.

The 'Minecraft' part of this little book relates to the relatively few 'block art' illustrations, offered in black and white shades once we get past the cover. For me, the block Minecraft textures are too limiting to properly convey torches or swords or even the main characters. I DO have to believe that making these was as important to the author as was working out the story. Readers would have to be almost 'addicted' to Minecraft to 'get' this aspect of the book.
  • Alex wakes up to the ultimate bad day Her village has been sacked and abandoned, and she's now become a zombie. Luckily, she has no craving for brains, but she does have the typical zombie reaction to sunlight. Over the next few nights, she gathers supplies, and then sets out to find out what happened to her village, and how to cure her...illness.

This book is a well-written, entertaining piece of fan fiction. The story is a great introduction to the Minecraft universe, as Alex goes through many of the same things that a beginning player will (gathering supplies, scouting the area, setting up a home, running away screaming). The writing is easy to read, but not overly simplistic. Younger and older kids will enjoy it, but it occasionally throws in some larger words that little kids will have to ask their parents about. The included artwork (screencapped from Minecraft itself) is engaging and really helps the story.

The real test, of course, was how my seven-year-old liked it (full disclosure he's an Aspie who reads @ a 6th-7th grade level). All in all, he really enjoyed the book. He got a kick out of seeing the game graphics built into the story, and really related to the characters (both in a gameplay and emotional level). He followed the story easily, and found the challenges pretty interesting. He thought that this installment of the story ended suddenly, but we're both looking forward to reading the sequel.
