"Ms. Snelling has written 50 or more books, but this one surprised me in what, to me, came across as less than a stellar novel. I enjoyed the theme of the book-small North Dakota town in 1903 with an in-training doctor, Astrid Bjorklund, and her doctor sister-in-law who run a clinic. Astrid can't decide if she should go off for 6 months to Chicago to train at a medical school or stay home and continue her work at the clinic. Before she can decide she 1) meets a man who's running from his past in Iowa and 2) she hears a missionary talk at church about the medical needs in Africa. What should she do? She ends up going to Chicago; her man, Joshua, returns to Iowa; she decides to go to missionary training in Georgia. The book ends as she sits on the train waiting for it to leave. And . . .? And, you have to get the next book in the series to find out what happens next. I learned a lot about small town farm life and even more about medical school in the early 20th century. What tripped me up was all the names of the Norwegians in town. I couldn't pronounce them nor remember who they all were. When it came to barn dances or holidays I skimmed over the numerous character names: Ingeborg, whose granddaughter was Inga-why would you have two such similar names in a novel? Her husband Haaken, son Thorliff, someone named Trygff. I also tired of the lengthy prayers contained in the book. I got this free on my Kindle"

- I was a little leary about buying this book after reading some negative reviews of it. But most of the negativity seemed to stem from readers who had never read any of the other books in the Blessing series. It was too hard for them to follow along with all of the characters. I had already read the "Daughters of Blessing" series, so I was familiar with all of the characters and background heading into this book. I did not rank this book as highly as I ranked the "Daughters of Blessing" books, because this book extends the story of Astrid beyond a single novel. I enjoyed it - especially the depth of prayers and increased interweaving of scripture - but I would have preferred to have had Astrid's story completed in a single novel. However, perhaps I will feel differently after reading Book #2. Overall, Lauraine Snelling is an extraordinarily gifted historical christian author. I pray God blesses her with continued creativity and wisdom to spiritually sharpen her readers while entertaining and educating them. )

- Lauraine Snelling couldn't write a bad book if she tried. Every time I think the last book was my favorite, I read the next in her series and fall in love all over again. She's a prolific writer and full of charisma. I love her style and that she is a Christian writer. You don't have to worry about cuss words or scenes you don't want to read about. I am reading her second book right now and it's really good. Just when I think I've figured out what's going to happen, she changes directions on me. That's good! I highly recommend her books starting with the first one. Beware, if you do, you'll end up getting them all and reading them. You just can't stop. They should make a series out of this series of books. They are that good.
- If you are looking for a book that is inspirational and you won't be embarassed to be seen reading it then "A Measure of Mercy" is that book. Lauraine Snelling has done another great job is weaving a intriguing story with 3 dimensional characters that draw you in and wrap you in their story.
I was pulled into the story as soon as it began, I felt like I was living in the township of Blessing and invited into the character's life. I could feel the emotion that the doctor's felt when they lost a patient and a baby during child birth. Even though there is a romance weaved into the storyline there is no kissing or hugging or anything untoward in the story that would deter me from letting a young lady read this.
Lauraine Snelling has another wonderful on the market one that I would not be afraid to suggest to a friend, married or unmarried. The wonderful thing about this book is how much the character rely and lean on God for His provisions, even when a character has a crisis of Faith she still turns to God for His knowledge and guidance in her life.

Astrid Bjorklaud has been studying medicine, in her hometown, of Blessing, alongside Dr. Elizabeth Bjorklund. They are wanting to build a hospital in Blessing and Dr. Elizabeth keeps encouraging Astrid to further her medical education in Chicago under Dr. Morganstein.
Joshua Landsverk, an old friend of Astrid's arrives back in town. Things between them haven't changed. He seeks her out to court her, and loves begins to blossom.
A Missionary from Africa visits the church in Blessing. He speaks to Astrid about possibly going to Africa as a doctor.
Astrid is torn about what to do.
She decides to head to Chicago to further her medical training.
Does she return to Blessing or does she head off to Africa as a missionary doctor. Only time will tell.
I loved this book. It's one I expect to reread in the future.
