Doing Research in the Real World David E Gray 9780761948797 Books Reviews

  • This was good.
  • Great book. Referenced it multiple time in a 15 page paper due for class.
  • This book is a well documented and comprehensive guide for empirical research. It also provides state of the art references. It is for both beginners and seasoned researchers. Highly recommended.
  • With Doing Research in the Real World, I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew. This is a huge 900 page textbook that covers the whole research process from beginning to end, and then some. It considers the nature of research from a philosophical standpoint and explores the different kinds of research. From defining your goals to presenting your paper, it provides guidance as well as resources. The associated website complements the textbook with quizzes and flashcards and videos. No matter what kind of research you may be planning, from academic and scholarly studies to corporate and civil policy-making, the book addresses ways to narrow down your focus, select the most appropriate data collection methods, and organize your finished product for the intended audience. VERY comprehensive.
  • When it comes to learning about doing research and dissertation writing or documenting research for professional journals, this book is incredible. It is comprehensive and surprisingly articulate and coherent. For students or professionals involved in research and writing, I cannot imagine a more helpful book. I've looked at several in my own studies, and I believe this book has it all. The online resources are an amazing benefit in themselves and are organized according to the chapters in the book. They are a generous offering from the author/publisher. I cannot say enough about the depth and breadth of this book and how well organized it is. It has the student in mind.
  • Where the heck were books like this when I was in grad school? Fabulous and up-to-date with ample resources, examples, explanations and visuals this isn't your old academic research text. Emphasis is on real world applications with an exceptionally clear and comprehensive explanation able to bridge the gap for those that might need a bit of brushing up or perfect to assist new learners. Quite exceptional. Makes a tedious topic accessible.
  • This is a useful volume. Environmental Studies and Sociology (and ethnography) graduate students in particular should find portions of the book very helpful.

That said, my personal pedagogical preference is to use multiple-author texts or anthologies rather than long single-author ones.
  • I truly appreciate the quality of this research book, which is a collection of wisdom about good research. Professor Gray is capable of explaining difficult concepts in an effective way. I agree without reservation that this book is reader-friendly, in-depth and comprehensive. It drives results. Every serious research student should read it!
